Young Naturalists

Uniquely designed for children 5-12 years old, Young Naturalists
provides experiences rich in science content and strong in active learning.

Summertime

Young NaturalistOffering early-learning science knowledge during a morning or afternoon of active outdoor discovery in our varied and pristine island meadows, forests, and watersheds, is an extraordinary match for young energetic minds. One to three hours in length, summer Young Naturalists engage in field based, hands-on science lead by environmental educators skilled in integrating nature studies with art, writing, and ecological role-playing games.

Summer Camp sessions, day care centers, and playgroups enliven their programs by incorporating one or more Young Naturalist sessions. Open enrollment, individual classes are also scheduled and announced throughout the summer.

Camp Nature Trunks

There are times when a Counselors’ daily activity plan can be enhanced by reaching into a Trunk of nature activities and games geared to either direct young camper energy in active play or engage campers in quietly focused time to refresh everyone’s wellspring of camaraderie. Ask us about Camp Nature Trunks as a stand alone purchase or combined with the nature workshops described above.

Training for Camp Counselors

Take the science information above and extrapolate an age appropriate series for in-coming Counselors and Specialists. Rather like an immersion survey course on island habitat, Training for Camp Counselors establishes the foundation for in-house peer education and the where-with-all to conduct solid natural science sessions for campers. You will learn the essential tools, those from which you may continue to develop and refine on your own.

Academic Year

During the school year, San Juan Nature Institute educators assist teachers in providing experiential learning based on the topics listed above. These in-class sessions may be comprised of a single visit or expanded to include a field trip.

For extended inquiry based natural science projects for school age students, read about San Juan Nature Institute’s Partners in Science.

Funding

A tuition schedule is available upon request. Designated sponsorships for a specific group or child are welcome and encouraged.
